Obtaining Visa
All foreign nationals, except Indians, are required to have a valid visa to enter Nepal. Requirements for tourist visa include:
- Valid passport with a minimum of six-month validity period. Duly filled in Visa application form
(download visa application form)Visa can be obtained by personally visiting the Embassy or sending documents by mail. - Visa once issued cannot be withdrawn, visa fee cannot be refunded after visa is issued, and it must be used within six months from the date of issue.

A tourist visa can be extended up to 120 days from the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu and Pokhara Immigration Office on request. Thereafter an additional 30 days can be extended from Department of Immigration ensuring that tourist visa cannot be extended more than 150 days in a visa year.
- Late fee for not applying extension in time:-
- US$2 in equivalent Nepalese currency per day for the first 30 days.
- US$3 in equivalent Nepalese currency per day for the next 31 to 90 days.
- US$5 in equivalent Nepalese currency per day for more than 90 days.
- Gratis visa eligibility:
- Children below 10 yrs.
- Dependants up to the age of 16 years, holding foreign passports of Nepalese parents or either of their parent being a Nepalese citizen.
- Citizen of Nepali origin, after having obtained passport for the first time from a Nepal based foreign mission, until the period of his departure to a foreign country.
- Citizens of member countries of South Asian association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Official Visa
Eligibility: Non-Diplomatic personnel of Missions and their family Members, Honorary/Nepalese Consulate Generals/Consuls and their family members (during the time of their visit to Nepal), Advisers and Specialists, working in Nepal under the official agreement and their family members, UN Agencies personnel, UN document holders and their family members, Personnel working in the International institutions or Regional Organizations in Nepal and their family members.

Student Visa

NRN Visa
The Nepalese Missions abroad or the Director General of the Department of Immigration can issue NRN visa for an initial period with the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Interim (Transit) Visa
Immigration Officer is allowed to issue an interim (transit) visa to any foreign national who needs to spend a night in Nepal before traveling to a third country or to any passenger of an aircraft that has made an emergency landing at Nepalese airport. Such a visa will be valid for one day.
Non-Tourist Visa
Eligibility: Foreigners, involved in Nepal Government approved economic and social development works.
Foreigners, involved in institutions managed by foreign missions.
Journalists.
Servants of diplomatic /officials visa holders.
Employees, involved in firms/companies/institutions/airlines/industries or business sectors.
Foreign Passport holders Nepalese origin.

Consular Services
Nepali Passport is valid for Ten years from the date of issue. It is non-renewable; thereafter passport holders are required to apply for a new passport well within time before expiry, but not earlier than six months validity period. However, in case of accidental damage of the passport or use of all the pages meant for visa, one could apply for new passport any time. Please note the following and send application accordingly the following addresses:
Affix one photograph with both ears exposed (size 1 ½ x 1 ¾) on the designated place in the application form and enclose one for passport. Photographs should not be older than six months.
Send money order or cashier's check of US $ 80.00 in the name of l Embassy of Nepal. If two or more applicants applying together, you may make a single money order or cashier's check multiplying the fee by the number of applicants. PERSONAL CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.
Send your current passport and its copies of page no. 1, 2 and 3.
Send a self-addressed strong envelope with sufficient postage to return passport/s. Regular or first class mail has no tracking number to inquire the delivery status. We advise applicants to send prepaid envelope of any kind of express mail to return passport/s. We take no responsibility of any undelivered passport/s because of the insufficient postal charge or a weak envelope to bear up the load.
For inclusion of your child's name in your passport, please include additional US $ 25.00 for each child and provide the following in a separate application addressed to the Embassy:
(i) full name of the child
(ii) sex
(iii) date and place of birth
(iv) copy of birth certificate
(v) two photographs, (size 2"x2") and
(vi) copy of father's passport (page no. 1, 2, and 3) as a proof of Nepalese citizenship. Parents may apply for individual passport for their child by filling-out an application form with all the information and documents as mentioned above. A child, whose father is not a citizen of Nepal, is not eligible to obtain Nepali passport.
(i) full name of the child
(ii) sex
(iii) date and place of birth
(iv) copy of birth certificate
(v) two photographs, (size 2"x2") and
(vi) copy of father's passport (page no. 1, 2, and 3) as a proof of Nepalese citizenship. Parents may apply for individual passport for their child by filling-out an application form with all the information and documents as mentioned above. A child, whose father is not a citizen of Nepal, is not eligible to obtain Nepali passport.
Those, who marry after arrival in foreign country and wish to include husband's family name in the passport, must submit a notarized copy of marriage certificate, for the first time.
Any amendment or modification of particulars given in the passport can be made only on payment of US $ 25.00 for each such amendment/ modification.
It takes about 2 weeks to issue a new passport after the application is received at the Embassy. In case of emergency, please call the Embassy to process your application at the earliest possible date.
Report to the local police and ask for an acknowledgment or a counter report as a proof and send it to the Embassy or Consulate General.
Send copies of page no. 1, 2 and 3 of lost passport and copy of visa issued by the concerned Embassy.
Send your original Citizenship Certificate, if not send its copy.
If you don't have copy of the lost passport and citizenship certificate, please specify the number of the lost passport and date and place of issue. In such a case, an indefinite time is required to verify records to issue a new passport if the lost passport was not issued by the Embassy or Consulate General indicated above.

Who may apply? : Diplomatic passport holders and their family members recommended from the concerned foreign diplomatic mission and considered fit to be granted diplomatic privileges by Government of Nepal.
The diplomatic visa shall be issued on the basis of reciprocity; the term thereof may be extended at a time or from time to time for the term of the assignment in Nepal.
Issuing Authority : Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Provided, however, that the diplomatic missions of Government of Nepal or the Immigration offices at the entry point may issue the diplomatic visa (as an entry visa for a period of 30 days).
Diplomats and their family members are eligible for diplomatic visa free of charge. Applicant must submit an official request through diplomatic mission or foreign ministry/department along with original passport and duly filled-out application form with one passport size photo affixed on that for diplomatic visa
Who may apply? : The official visa shall be granted to the persons considered fit by Government of Nepal and their family and to the following foreigners and their family upon recommendation of the concerned diplomatic mission:
Administrative, Technical and non-diplomatic officials serving in a residential or non-residential diplomatic missions, Consulate for Nepal and incumbent Nepalese honorary Consul Generals, Consuls and their family who visit Nepal from a foreign country.
Consultant experts who stay in Nepal under an agreement with Government of Nepal,
Employees serving in the Nepal based offices of the United Nations or its agencies and the persons holding the laissez passes granted by the United Nations.
Employees serving in the international institutions or regional organizations located in Nepal.
Persons to come to participate in assembly, conference, training or meeting organized by Government of Nepal or Government of Nepal's undertaking agency or United Nations Organizations or Regional Organization or other agencies there under.
Issuing Authority : Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Provided, however, that the diplomatic missions of Government of Nepal or the Immigration offices at the entry point may issue the official visa (as an entry visa for a period of 30 days).
Valid official passport or holder of UN laissez passes or ordinary passport holder who is visiting Nepal for official duty, a recommendation letter from the concerned authority with a duly filled out visa application form affixing a passport size photo on it.
Official visas are issued free of cost (Gratis) valid for 30 days from the date of entry into Nepal.

Foreign representatives having obtained recommendation from the Ministry of Information and Communications to work in foreign newspapers and news agencies,
Foreigners having obtained recommendation from the concerned Ministry to act as helpers of the foreigners having obtained diplomatic or official visas,
Foreigners having obtained approval from Government of Nepal to work on remuneration basis in any firm, company, association, industry or enterprise within Nepal,
Foreigners having obtained recommendation from the Ministry concerned to work in any international airlines organization located in Nepal,
Foreign importer visiting Nepal from third country on the recommendation of foreign governmental agency or Federation of Industries or Chamber of Commerce of Foreign Country,
Foreigners who have marital relation with the citizens of Nepal and furnish the marriage registration certificate, h1. If any foreigner of Nepali origin or a foreign passport holder issue of a Nepalese father or mother is to come to Nepal to visit any relatives.
Foreigners who come to Nepal to work, on the recommendation of the concerned Ministry pursuant to an agreement or understanding agreed upon at governmental or non governmental level,
Foreigners having obtained recommendation of the concerned Ministry to conduct feasibility study of an industry or enterprise for a period not exceeding 6 months.
Group leader of the foreigners making application, accompanied by the recommendation of the Ministry concerned, for making the tourists' tour in group in Nepal.
Such Foreigners as may be thought fit by Government of Nepal.

Following foreign students, research scholars, teachers and their family members who want to study, teach or conduct research works in any educational institute having obtained the approval of the Government of Nepal.

The applicants should produce :
Recommendation letter from the Ministry of Education and Sports of Nepal.
Bank encashment receipt or bank balance equivalent to US$ 3,000 per year or US$ 250 per month for applicants and US$ 2,000 for each family members.
Six copies of application forms with photographs.
One photocopy of passport including the copy of last Nepalese visa.
Duration : Up to one year, however, it can be extended for the period of research or academic year.

Who may apply :
The business visa shall be granted to the following foreigners and their family members on the recommendation of concerned agency:
Foreigners having obtained license to make investment in any business or industrial enterprise within Nepal or authorised representatives of such business or industrial enterprise.
Foreigners having obtained license to invest to carry on export trade from Nepal.
Foreigners visiting Nepal from third country who export goods manufactured in Nepal through purchase or who place a purchase order for export

Licence certificate to make investment in any business or industrial enterprise in Nepal.
Recommendation from the concerned Ministry/Department.

Bank statement showing expenses equivalent to US$ 20,000.00 per year
Health certificate (only for those foreigners who are interested to settle down in Nepal, but are not engaged in any business),
No objection letter from consulate or embassy of their country.

With the Second Amendment of the Immigration Rule, 2059, a new provision has been added for special type of visa known as Non-residential Nepalese Visa. This visa facilitates non-residential Nepalese or the people of Nepalese origin and their family members to stay in Nepal for longer duration for personal work, for business or for study and research purpose. The visa is valid up to 10 years and is renewable.
The Department of Immigration in Nepal is authorized to issue the visa with the approval of the Ministry of Home for the first time. The application for the visa may be submitted either through the Nepalese Missions abroad or directly at the Department of Immigration in Nepal.
Visa fee: US $ 100.00 or equivalent foreign currency for the period of one year. However, for students the charge will be half of the above amount.

The visa, generally for a period of one week, shall be issued to any foreigner who has departed from Nepal and whose entry has been rejected and who has been sent back by any country to Nepal or to any foreigner traveling in an aircraft having landed in Nepal casually due to any reason.

Provisional Visa Arrangements
In cases where it takes time to make recommendation for the study, non-tourist and business visa, the concerned ministry may, upon assigning the said reason, make recommendation for the provisional study, non-tourist and business visa for a period not exceeding three months.
In cases where it takes time for a foreigner to submit the marriage registration certificate to get a non-tourist visa on martial relation ground, the Department may, on the basis of the recommendation of the authority or the Embassy of the concerned country, issue the provisional non-tourist visa for a period not exceeding three months.
Children below 10 yrs.
Dependants upto the age of 16 years, holding foreign passports of Nepalese parents or either of their parent being a Nepalese citizen.
Citizen of Nepali origin, after having obtained passport for the first time from a Nepal based foreign mission, until the period of his departure to a foreign country.
Citizens of member countries of South Asian association forRegional Cooperation (SAARC) and the people's Republic of china.
Any foreigner, who has lived in Nepal upto fifteen (15) days continuously, re-entering Nepal during the same visa year.
Any foreigner, tourist entering into Nepal for three days or less than that.
Some Important information to tourist : Don't or Do's
A tourist may stay in Nepal upto 150 days in a visa year (Jan-Dec).
A tourist must extend his/her visa before expiry of the visa validity period. A tourist who does not comply with these regulations may be liable of fine and other prosecution as provided in Immigration Act and Rules.
A Foreigner having obtained tourist visa shall not be allowed to work with or without receiving remuneration.
A foreigner shall not be allowed to carry out any work other than that for which purpose s/he has obtained the visa.
The Department may issue the travel permits to those foreigners who are not able to obtain new passports due the loss, deface, or expiry of the term thereof or due to any other reasons, in order to enable them to return to their home countries.
Provided, however, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall issue such permit in the case of the person holding diplomatic and official passport.
